Okay, so I've been catching a lot of heat lately from my coworkers
about the vulgarity of my website. Most of 'em know I'm a contracted writer, and that I'm actively marketing my first
novel, Children of Ascendance, Book 1, for publication. But my clean cut appearance and smiling disposition
led them to believe that "Work Mike" was the same as "Outside-of-Work Mike", and professional acquaintances who'd previously
vowed to buy my first book as soon as it hit the shelves, are now having second thoughts because they believe it will be like
the website.
Nothing could be farther from the truth.
The website is factual, (for the most part), while my novels
are pure fantasy fiction. The writing style is different, the tone is different, and certainly the language is different-
but trying to verbally articulate that makes it seem like I'm backtracking or apologizing, so I've decided to mix my hobby
with my hoped-for profession. Posted below you'll find an excerpt from what I like to call my "real writing".
It's the recently rewritten Prologue to my third book entitled, The Sender.
The Sender is the newest installment in
the Children of Ascendance trilogy, and I'm posting a smidgen of it not only so that my coworkers and more conservative
friends can see that I don't have to curse every other sentence, but also to get input from my website audience. Some
of the Prologue below will make absolutely no sense, chiefly because it is indeed the third book in the series, and you'd
have to have read the other two to fully understand the plotline as a whole. Still, I'm not asking for advice on the
plotline, I'm asking for input on the writing style and the quality of my work. Criticism
is just as welcomed as praise, so please, please, please, post your thoughts on Mike's Forum, or at least email me your opinions.
I don't consider such things "hate mail" so don't worry about me coming back and maliciously ripping your comments apart.
If I get enough feedback, I'll post other excerpts.
If nobody responds, this will probably be the only one. After all, I'm taking a big chance by putting my serious stuff
on the internet, (due to plagiarism and maybe even some contractual violations with my agency), and it's up to you guys to
make it worth my while.
Anyway, here goes nothing:
By the way, if the story line is absolutely SO confusing that
you can't make hide nor hair of it, email and let me know. If necessary, I'll post a brief overall plot summary so that
you understand who the characters mentioned are, and how they ended up in their respective positions. Either way, thanks
in advance for reading.
